Liverpool Empire: Sister Act

I have never seen the film Sister Act.

Alright, calm down. It’s not like I’m saying I’ve never watched Clueless. Sometimes films just pass you by, don’t they?

Anyway, it turns out that not only had the classic 90’s comedy passed me by, I also had no idea about the plot either. “She’s not really a nun, Zo - she in a witness protection scheme” my Aunty explained to me before we sat in our seats at The Empire last night for the touring musical adaption of the film. I was certainly going to be experiencing the show without any expectations about it living up to the standard of the movie.

Alexandra Burke takes on Whoopi Goldberg’s role of Deloris Van Cartier, a disco diva who witnesses her married fella commit a murder and goes into hiding in the one place she won’t be found - a convent. It’s all big vocals, feel good songs and a sweet tale of sisterhood and friendship. Alexandra Burke is fabulous as the lead and belts out some vocals that reminds you just why she won the X Factor a few years ago (and also that time she absolutely lost her shit when she got to perform with Beyonce!)

The whole production is flawless and well choreographed but I couldn’t help thinking that none of the musical numbers were particularly catchy and some even got a tad boring. When chatting to people afterwards who had seen the movie (aka every single other person in the whole of the world apart from me it seems) it turns out none of the songs featured in the film make an appearance in the stage adaptation which seems a bit odd. Perhaps they wouldn’t work in a musical or they couldn’t get the rights to them maybe? Either way, it seemed to disappoint quite a few fans.

Even though a few songs hit a bum note in terms of being entertaining now and again, the whole show, in my opinion, is well worth a watch for the touching moments and laugh out loud comedy moments. In fact, I enjoyed it so much I’m off to see if Sister Act is on Netflix.

Sister Act runs at the Empire until Saturday 15th October and you can grab your tickets here.
